  1. Hello!

Thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving these encouraging comments, especially for my dissertation.

This video is quite intriguing. I like it very much and I’m amazed by its professional smooth outlook. I guess that copyrights have been a bit trampled on the way, but still this is quite an amazing work. I have seen a couple of AMVs before and I was just wondering what was the initial motivation for this kind of musical-video compilation. Do you have any explanations?

Thank you and keep up the nice blog!

  2. Thank you for your comment. Memory Flash AMV was a collaborative project among thirteen French editors from the biggest forum in France on AMVs. The theme was memory, but each editor was free to express it in her/his own way. The AMV consists of 12 Tracks, 30 seconds each. I don’t know the exact reason why they decided to collaborate, but I think it was motivated similarly to any other collaboration: a desire to work together, produce something great, and enjoy the experience :)

To learn more, please visit their forum: http://amvdefans.com/ and webpage for this project on AMV website (includes French version of the information I provided): http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=140804

AMVs in general are unique works of art. An editor has to make a story based on footage from one or several anime and add appropriate music. It is not an easy task. Especially I find that very few AMVs have appropriate music or good story. Yet there is something particular about AMVs. While musical clips is a similar media, they serve to illustrate and amplify the song first and foremost. I believe the best AMVs elicit the emotions we felt when we saw the original anime. Some AMVs can be enjoyable even when you have not seen the anime it was based on, but the effect is much greater when you know who the characters are and what they go through.

Here are some of the best AMVs:

Rurouni Kenshin OVA – Trust and Bertrayal (major spoilers, Drama, Action)

Rurouni Kenshin OVA – Reflection (Drama)

Neon Genesis Evangelion – Faithless (Psychological)

Now and Then, Here and There – Hope (War Drama)

Azumanga Daioh – Lord of Rings Trailer (Comedy)

Ghibli Collection (While this AMV has some structure, there is no specific story – it is a tribute to the work capturing some of the best scenes with a nice background music)

Something Wicked Comes This Way (This is a good example how the original story of anime can be completely changed by the music)

    Have fun :)

  3. This is really an interesting explanation! Thank you for the links! I think I’ll definitely have to do more research about the AMV’s as it actually fits quite nicely in the general context of my Ph.D. thesis. I don’t how much space I’ll be able to devote to this topic, but I’ll try my best! I’ll also post about it on my blog when I have get a better insight of this kind of work.
