Ryoko Tamura (Yawara-chan) Wins Bronze in Beijing 2008
August 9, 2008
Watch the semifinal and bronze medal competition.
Ryoko Tani is a famous judoka from Japan. She is often referred to as Yawara-chan because her fate was quite similar to the fictional protagonist of the manga Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl by Naoki Urasawa (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto). She won medals in five consecutive Olympic games and has eight World Championship medals (7/8 are gold). Ryoko Tani had not been beaten in a major international competition since 1996. Many people were rooting for her to win gold again, but she took bronze this time. Perhaps, the recent birth of her child influenced her performance. Nonetheless, winning five consecutive medals is not easy – congratulations!
