Otakon 2008 Fansubs and Industry Panel
August 17, 2008Just like with Anime Expo 2008 Industry Roundtable, another attempt to assess the current situation with anime disseminaiton took place at Otakon 2008. Watch the video and read the summary.
The industry side was less represented at this meeting compared to the last one, but the dialog was interesting nonetheless. I always like talks by Funimation’s Lance Heiskell – you got to love his perpetual use of “you know” lol At least Funimation has a plan how to proceed, unlike Media Blaster (MB) that just don’t want to deal with the situation. However, MB are quite sneaky 
What they are doing is getting a specific audience. Screw Naruto fans, we’ll go after the collectors and the shows that have very few or no funsubs at all: yaoi, yuri, hentai, etc.
One aspect that I noticed on this and other panel is that these people are not very good at public speaking. Their nervousness manifested is some bizarre hand movements lol I guess that is how many otaku feel like due to social deprivation.

I’m sure as a blogger you’re a much more accomplished public speaker, especially when you’ve only got a minute or two to make a point.
Since many people participating in these panels have jobs not directly related to public speaking, it is not surprising to see such a performance. Hopefully, they will look at the video and learn from their mistakes.
