Akana, I guess Ozuma’s words can be insulting, but I think he tries to help Alto in a way, makes him think about who Alto really is. The quest for meaning in life and the right path is especially appealing to young people and one of the reasons Macross Frontier is so popular (many other factors exists though).

I agree I don’t think Ozma said what he did to be mean to Alto he was just trying to get him to stop sitting on the fence.
Alto has always been unsure of his path and Ozma was just trying to get him to find it. What are your wings for? Why do you fight, why do you fly?
Without knowing the answer to those kinds of questions Alto can’t give it his all.
He can’t really protect Ranka or be there for Sheryl if he’s only doing it with a half hearted effort. Only when you truly know what you are fighting for can you give your very best.
Alto won’t accomplish anything by sitting around being emo or firing off and shooting things in anger. That won’t really change much at all. If he knows what he wants then he can figure out how to go for it.

Yeah, Alto has to find what he really wants soon and confess. Since you are a writer, how would you approach this situation? How would you end the series?
Lol, killing off a character is a pretty difficult thing, especially if you’ve grown attached to her. But argh, I really have no idea how I would finish the series. Definitely, Sheryl getting killed by a Vajra while singing for Alto is quite heroic, but man, is it going to screw with his psyche or what, lol. If that happens, I’m half afraid he’ll never truly “fall” in love with Ranka, seeing as how he’ll think that everyone he loves gets hurt/killed in the end.
Speaking of killing loveable characters (although, Sheryl is far from loveable), I hated what they did to Mikhail/Michael. Damn. Oh well, at least it’s not like Code Geass and X, where it seems like EVERYONE is going to die.

Ah, that is a very good point about the traumatic effect on Alto. I wonder how Sheryl’s death will affect Alto. Perhaps, he’ll see that even at the brink of death Sheryl followed her path, her passion to sing. He’ll look deep inside himself to search for his true passion and realize that he really loves freedom of the true sky.
In this episode we hear various opinions about space. Right after Shery x Alto scene we see Ranka: “Space is so incredible. It is so vast and beautiful… I feel like I am being swallowed up”
Contrasted by the next scene of the new president talking about vastness of space, who claims that it is too small for both humans and Vajra. Oh, by the way, Leon’s last name is Mishima
Alto was never free. He was forced to perform since childhood and only recently escaped from that circle. However, he still repressed his emotions. Experience with Sheryl will allow him to open up. He’ll do anything he can to prevent another person he cares about from dieing.

ZOMG! I felt a horrible stab of pain in my heart at the scene with Sheryl. T.T I like Sheryl, but I’m an avid Ranka supporter. I don’t really care who Alto ends up with, save for the fact that Ranka loves him. I’d be more than fine if he went off to lovey-dovey land with Sheryl, if it wouldn’t cause Ranka pain.
And let me just get this out of the way – I HATE ALTO
Passionate hate, too. He’s an idiot male lead who is gets so wrapped up with whoever he’s with at the moment, that he forgets there are other people who care about him. He has no real substance to him. Sure, he’s a good guy for the most part. But his inability to choose between two women makes him an evil tease. He’s toying with Sheryl and Ranka’s emotions. Saying he’ll be with Sheryl forever and promising to protect Ranka, GAH! It makes me so flippin mad! *Head Desk*
Ranka is to good for him. If she weren’t related to Brera, I’d say he’d be good for her. At least actually cares about her well being. But he’s a cyborg now…so does that count as relation?! I went and confused myself.
Ok, so I’ve decided since episode 16 that it doesn’t matter who ends up with who, because ultimately Ranka will be with me!

We have a semi-annual inspection at work so its crazy hectic! My job is problematic in that I’m a supervisor whilst maintaining my technician role.
So whilst I’m really busy with my supervisor stuff right now people are also needing me for my tech skills.

As for MF. I’m not convinced we should count Sheryl out as dead despite her diagnosis. Plus I feel while he didn’t expressly come out and say it, that in pledging himself to Sheryl to the last moment he as good as said it.
He made his choice clear and instead of going out there and finding Ranka he’s staying with Sheryl.
Even if Sheryl were to die, he still won’t end up with Ranka. Alto isn’t the kind of fickle man to pledge himself to one woman have her die and then run off to another one before the body is even cold.
My hime has more integrity than that.
Oh and I want my MICHEL-KUN BACK! While they’re at it, I want my Kurz Weber back too. I think we should start a campaign.

Alto is indecisive not because he does not care, but because he cares too much for both of them. He does not want to hurt feelings of others, but his indecisiveness does that.

Alto’s pledge can be considered as an implicit confession, but I believe he did it because of the moment and her conditions. Forever might mean a week to a month in her case… I hope they will develop some kind of treatment to save her though.
Would you leave a dying person you care about alone and go after the one you love? I think Alto made the right choice by staying with Sheryl during such a difficult period in her life.
I agree that he is not that kind of person, but he will not run off to Ranka – he’ll run to save her, and their relationship will gradually continue to develop from there.
Oh yeah, it would be great to see Michael back! They will regenerate him Grace style
@Kitsune – I know that Alto cares for the girls, but his inability to choose between them is hurting them more than if he just picked one. I find it stupid how everyone is divided up in to Ranka and Sheryl supprorters when those girls wouldn’t even be fighting if it weren’t for Alto. The girls all always take the crap in love triangle, and everyone thinks the guys perfect.
Alto is faaaaaar from perfect, even if he is pretty. Usually I can understand while the female characters want to be with the male lead,but this time I just can’t.
Amayalee, I don’t think everyone is divided into Ranka and Sheryl supporters, but I agree that many people take sides with the character they prefer the most. Also I think many people realize the imperfections of Alto.
I understand that it would be easier for everyone if Alto picked one person, but the reality is more difficult sometimes. Let’s imagine if Alto picked Ranka and went after her, leaving Sheryl behind. Just think how Sheryl would feel, left all alone to die…
Hm, I’m not saying he should leave Sheryl or go after Ranka, but he shouldn’t swear himself to her either when he hasn’t made up his mind. But staying with someone out of pity isn’t a good choice either. I know it’s complicated, but he could support both girls in a much better way if he just got his act together. Then I wouldn’t feel like bashing his head against a wall everytime he does something stupid.

Haha, that’s a good question. I probably would have picked up on the fact that both girls were after me sooner, and gone with the one I truly loved. Making it clear to the other that this is how it is, and if she stuck around I’d protect her too. But not out of love, out of friendship. There would be less hurt that way and it would have been resolved. But then the anime would have no drama, so the stupid male lead was a necessity.
Alto hasn’t even really give any consideration too which one he truly loves.
And I didn’t think he was only sticking around out of pity, but that has to be one of the emotions thrown in there.

It is good that you can make quick decisions about love. Unfortunately, such decisions take more time for others 
The problem with Alto is that he is going through identity crisis. He did choose the sky despite his family obligations, but he has not finished the process completely. Thus, doubts and questioning about self inhibit and take time from contemplating about other things.
Which totally proves my point. If he stopped being so scattered about everything he could be determined to do what he truly wants to do. He just never sits down and takes the time to think about it, it’s the same way with choosing between Ranka and Sheryl. Alto has a tendency to just drift with whatever is going on at the moment.
When he’s with Ranka, Ranka matters most. When he’s with Sheryl, Sheryl matters most. You can’t run the show that way, it’ll only make things horrible for you in the end.
I sympathize with Alto on certain aspects, but he could still get his ass in gear. I think he just might, thanks to Ozma’s little push at the end of this episode.
I’ll tone down my hate for Alto to dislike, I’ll just wait and see if he does anything to redeem himself in the next few episodes. If he doesn’t, than he shall remain the crappy male lead.

May I ask how long you’ve been studying Japanese and what method you used?
University major, 4th year. 1,5 of those years have been spent living in japan as an exchange student.
And my translations seen here suffer greatly from being way too literal. Guess its because I’m almost overly careful in being unbiased as well trying to include every nuance, rather than making english that’s easy on the ears.

As I said in a post about fansubbing, I prefer translations to be as close to the original as possible, even it they turn out to be too literal.
It’s different. I was often told it’d be difficult to adjust, but I managed just fine. Didn’t have any major culture-shock or anything. Guess forehand knowledge played a large part in that. As for prospective proffesion… I don’t know, I may even consider working there, for a while, after I graduate.
