Otaku Test: Spot a Reference

September 12, 2008

Now, I don’t consider myself well versed in this thing, but I wanted to see how much a casual anime watcher like me can recognize in this picture. This is my list. Help me to figure out the rest of it :)

I see…

- The girl in the middle of the picture is Haruhi
- Haruhi has the laughing man badge from Ghost in the Shell
- The girl behind Haruhi is the stalking girl from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei lol
- Haruhi has a Mercedes Benz sign on her belt? O_o
- The other girl is Kyonko, a female version of Kyon :P
- Little girl with gray hair and cat ears is from Haruhi as well
- The long cat that a girl on the right is holding is from that scary longest image on the web probably lol
- At the top left corner, you can clearly see a Vocaloid girl with her plant
- Two girl heads on the shelf look familiar, but I don’t know who they are exactly
- Ronald McDonald is from those evil Japanese videos
- The figure by Ronald is Saber
- The poster on the wall says Slaughter and I am guessing that is some kind of Higurashi reference with a poster featuring that laughing crazy girl :P The letters in that word are obscured by legs of poor Itoshiki sensei
- You can see an anime firefox icon on the flat computer screen :3
- The mousepad is perverted! Seriously, breasts holding your arm? O_o
- The girls at the middle of the right side of the picture are familiar too, but I don’t know their names

Well, that is all I can descry in that image :) I couldn’t identify many other references, so I guess I am not otaku after all :P

What do you see in this image?

  1. This image is missing some model kits for mecha…

But the mousepads are normal, actually (well, for otaku). I’ve seen many.

…And you missed the Death Note.

  2. Ah, yes, model kits should have been there too! ( I never owned one though :P )

    Normal for otaku? Perhaps. lol

Oh, I think I see Death Note now, heh. Well, I have not seen and have no plans to see that anime, so could not pick it up easily :)

  3. Ha! I got just about all of the ones you did, plus the Death Note one! Otherwise I didn’t spot much else. Things like this tend to make my brain feel fried. So I’ll look at it a bit, go away, come back and look some more, till I eventually spot everything.

  4. That leek sure does look familiar XD I remember a post w/a cosplayer performing that weird song from one of your posts with the leek in hand. That’s about all I know. XD

  5. Amayalee, yup, plenty of material to absorb and reflect upon. Let me know if you find something else :)

Rantsdelnicoleta, I think you are talking about that Anime Expo Cosplay post :) Yes, that Hatsune Miku is quite famous. Take a look at this brief compilation of all the crazy stuff people made with Vocaloid :P

  6. I would like to add
    1. another Haruhi reference on a magazine, between the pantyhosed legs of the central figure.

    2. not too sure about the slaughter poster, but I’m pretty sure it’s one of those inspirational posters that I see so much of

  7. Ne Kitsune, just a random question, is there anyway to get rid of subs while making an AMV? I’m trying to make one and they are bugging the hell out of me. >.<

  8. 7, thank you for those finds :) I think I found that poster and added it as a link :)

Amayalee, I am not an expert on video, but I can see two possibilities: 1) you can find a raw video (without subtitles) and work with it 2) you can try to turn off subs. Many anime come subbed with so called soft subs now. You can turn them off and work with the video. Sometimes subs come in a separate file, so you can just remove that file from the same directory as you video and you have a raw video.

You can try these resources also:

  9. Oh, I just had a moment of insight about Haruhi’s hat. I was wondering what those three letters stood for. At first I thought it was about 2channel, but letter K didn’t add up. However, I realized that 2CK stands for Haruhi’s attitude: To Seek :D

  10. Thank you! All the RAWS of the anime I was using were replaced with subbed episodes. I’ll definitely try that.

  11. Have fun :)

  12. Click remote from the movie “Click” near the tv. :3

  13. I have not seen this movie, but it seems that this remote played an important part in the film.

  14. [...] mentioned another otaku test based on anime and other pop-culture references before. This time the test is about manga [...]

  15. And I saw Tsuruya from Haruhi.

  16. Oh, that’s nice :) Where is she?

  17. Yuki being all neko in the left bottom corner
The nendroid also bears a simliar reference to a girl I’ve seen alot *don’t know who her name is* who normally wears a red and black outfit with a cross, plushie lucky star gang, and one of the girls has a similar braid to kaede from that show shuffle! i think? thats the rest i could find that wasn’t already stated :)

    • Thank you for pointing those out :)
