Japan Media Arts Festival Awards 2008
December 10, 2008
You’ll never guess what jury recommended
First, I am going to list the winners of the grand prizes in all categories with brief descriptions, and then I’ll mention jury recommendations in anime category.
Art Division
Oups!: Marcio AMBROSIO
Humorous graphics appear in front of the audience facing the screen. The graphics make the audience start to move — they pretend to play the guitar or punch the air like Superman. They get into acting and play with the exhibition. A variety of contents are pre-installed, eliciting a pleasant reaction with a good tempo from the audience. Everyone will enjoy this lighthearted installation.
Entertainment Division
Tenori-On: IWAI Toshio / NISHIBORI Yu representing the
TENORI-ON development teamA device with an interface similar to a video game console, and designed to use light and sound to create a new type of musical instrument. The 256 LRD lights, arranged so that there are 16 vertical lines in 16 horizontal rows, function as switches; they create patterns of light that allow the player to visually control the sound. This entry made a great impression, and was developed cooperatively with a company to create a marketable product.
Animation Division
The House of Small Cubes: KATO Kunio
An old man lives in a room that resembles a pile of stacked up wooden blocks surrounded by water. He drops his pipe in the submerged lower floor. When he dives to pick it up, he encounters memories of his family carved in each room. The precious memories of the people he used to know, including his absent wife and daughter, are depicted with a gentle touch, making this a fine and moving piece of work. The theme of global warming is also hidden just below the surface.
Kaiba took Excellence Prize.
Manga Division
PIANO NO MORI: ISSHIKI Makoto
An abandoned piano that seems unplayable lies in a forest at the edge of a town. Brought up in this piano forest is an unorthodox boy of genial musical talent. This is the story of his desire to become a pianist and of his encounters with many diverse people.
Special Achievement Prize
NAKAYA Fujiko (Artist)
