Yoshitoshi ABe, the Japanese illustrator most famous for designing the Serial Experiments Lain anime and creating Haibane Renmei, has self-published his own dōjinshi manga Pochiyama at the Pharmacy this week in Apple’s iTunes App Store in 20 countries, including the United States and Canada. ABe’s 53-page manga, which sells for US$4.99 or 600 yen, uses Ubiquitous Entertainment’s multilingual comic viewer software for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch devices.

  1. ABe himself wrote about this on his blog. I wanted to drop a brief “thank you” message (in English, of course), but the comment box won’t take pure alphanumeric text. T_T

It looks great on the iPod Touch: sharp images, readable text, user-friendly navigation. The English translation could be better, but I’m generally okay with it.

  2. Well, you can always say thank you in Japanese: ありがとうございます 🙂

It is a good move on his side. Probably, many people will use this opportunity.

  3. Funny, you should mention Yoshitoshi ABe. I just watched Haibane Renmei yesterday. I think it was the first time I watched an entire series in one day.

  4. I’ve finished reading the doujinshi, and I regret to report that the translation provoked a lot of head-scratching. Machine-generated, perhaps?

But the art is too good for me to let this one go. I’m diving in again – and praying that the story will make more sense the second time around.

  5. I have not read it, but it might be machine generated since it is available in 20 nations (does not mean 20 languages, but I suspect it is close to that number). On the other hand it would be quite unprofessional to publish machine generated translation, don’t you think? Perhaps, the translators were not very good.

Yes, Abe’s art is really great! I’ll post about his new manga soon 🙂
