Ah, the final episode at last… I really enjoyed this series due to its slow pace, fun characters, and wonderful art. Director Akiyuki Shinbo and editor Kazuhiko Seki teamed up again and produced an anime with a distinctive feel. The pacing, attention to details, and appropriate music are similar to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (SZS), but the differences are in presentation. While SZS relies mostly on color alone to a great effect, both color and texture of the backgrounds play an important role in Hidamari Sketch x 365.

The background texture can enhance the depiction of emotion a character is experiencing as we often see in manga. Other anime use the backgrounds in similar manner, but Hidamari’s backgrounds are quite interesting because they borrow some inspiration from manga, yet still look unique. Backgrounds without textures and characters themselves are well colored as well.

Overall, I am pleased with this anime and look forward to further works by Akiyuki Shinbo. In the meantime, Hyakko is another series with a great director 😉
