Best Anime 2008: Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Ah, nothing mends the soul better than some despair baked with comedy, spiced with satire, sprinkled with social commentary, and served with wonderful music. Zetsubou Sensei is one of my top five favorite anime of all time, and my favorite anime that finished airing in 2008 🙂
The show has numerous references and plenty of latent content. Points of discussions cover a wide variety of topics including other anime, popular culture, and social issues.
Especially impressive is the use of color. In contrast to Hidamari Sketch, this anime relies mostly on raw color rather than texture to produce the effect (this changed somewhat in Goku OVAs). The color design is especially poignant because it is specifically tailored for context of the scenes, reflecting the state of the person.
Another interesting aspect of the design is the animation of clothes. While the silhouette moves, the texture stays constant. I liked this technique that reminded me of Gankutsuou.
One of the most enjoyable features of this anime to me is music. I love all those retro songs and the melodies fit the scenes very well. Most scenes themselves look great due to very careful planning and timing of shots.
