Is a woman’s virginity worth $3.8 million? That’s how much a 22-year-old from San Diego, California, said she has been offered through an auction she announced in September.

If you think Dylan’s auction amounts to prostitution, she completely agrees. She also said she’s not breaking any laws — after all, prostitution in Nevada is legal.

“I feel people should be pro-choice with their body, and I’m not hurting anyone,” she said. “It really comes down to a moral and religious argument, and this doesn’t go against my religion or my morals. There’s no right or wrong to this.”

The idea that virginity has a high value harkens back to the days of early humans — if a man has sex with a virgin woman, he knows for sure that her children will be his, anthropologists reason. In early civilizations, women were also considered the property of men, said Laura Carpenter, assistant professor of sociology at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

Today, about 95 percent of Americans have sex before they’re 25, Carpenter said. But worldwide, virgin prostitutes can claim larger fees, certain cultures still attach larger dowries to virgin brides, and some women undergo reconstructive surgery to restore their hymens.

Brett Austin Vanderzee, a 19-year-old student at Oklahoma Christian University who has pledged to stay a virgin until marriage, finds Dylan’s actions somewhat appalling, but not shocking.

Others say there’s just too much hype around virginity. Martha Kempner, vice president for information and communications for the nonprofit Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S., said telling a young woman to stay”pure” misses the point that sexuality will influence her long after she loses her virginity.

“By putting the emphasis there, [on virginity], we’re actually devaluing the rest of women, the rest of her, and the rest of her sexuality for the rest of her life,” she said.

“Honestly, even if I didn’t do this, I’d always be the girl who thinks prostitution is OK,” she said. “I would always want to find a partner that can accept me for me.”

  1. Tsk! so very the idiot to waste such a huge amount of $$$ like that, even though the bloke himself may not think otherwise. I am of the impression that the woman in question seeks publicity…anything for a moment of fame…its never really about pro-choice, morality or what not. That’s just a ruse. She must be really bored with life. 😛

  2. OkamiSensei,

Earning money is not easy for men and women. That person must be quire rich, if he is willing to pay such an amount.

Indeed, she definitely seeks publicity. She wants money and also treats this as an experiment. She is planning to get a masters degree in Family Studies and Sex Therapy.

  3. Prostitution is the ultimate exploitation of women. Every time a woman looses her virginity except in a loving marriage, it is a crime against women, men , and children. Most men desire to make all women horrs and the world to be one big bordello. Most women are stupid enough and naive enough to allow them to do it; however, not all and Thank God for that. Gentlemen or rather pigs, not all women submit to your slavery and one of these days women will desire to be free and be free indeed from the lust of men. That day we will have equality and young women will be free. Let all women be virgins!

  4. This is pretty disturbing news.. :< … so then what should be the worth of a virgin female then.. should a person give it up as what this women is doing, or should they grab the closest guy and then jump him then? I think there are a lot more virgin females out there, that wouldn’t choose the route of an auction to give their virginity up with, but given some posts I saw on Craigslist once, I agree that having a virgin status is overrated, but as social beliefs would trump over the modesty of a person … then if you’re not a virgin, then are you a skank?

  5. Mrs. Renee’ Hunter,

Yes, prostitution may involve exploitation, but it is not the ultimate form.

Loss of virginity outside of marriage is not a crime, but I see why some people might oppose it.

It sounds like you have a very positive view of most men and women…

Gender disparities do exist, but your description is too extreme.

I don’t think a person should either sell her/himself or grab the closest person. Not being a virgin does not make you a skank. I also agree that too much value is placed on virginity. Life is filled with so many problems, why add another one? Why worry about such a trivial part of life? Unfortunately, influences of society or religion are too strong for some people to resist.
