Higashi no Eden 1

Director, Screenplay, Original Creator: Kenji Kamiyama (Blood: The Last Vampire, Ghost in the Shell, Moribito)

It must be by his death: and for my part,
I know no personal cause to spurn at him,
But for the general. He would be crown’d:
How that might change his nature, there’s the question.
It is the bright day that brings forth the adder;
And that craves wary walking. Crown him?–that;–
And then, I grant, we put a sting in him,
That at his will he may do danger with.
The abuse of greatness is, when it disjoins
Remorse from power
: and, to speak truth of Caesar,
I have not known when his affections sway’d
More than his reason. But ’tis a common proof,
That lowliness is young ambition’s ladder,
Whereto the climber-upward turns his face;
But when he once attains the upmost round.
He then unto the ladder turns his back,
Looks in the clouds, scorning the base degrees
By which he did ascend. So Caesar may.
Then, lest he may, prevent. And, since the quarrel
Will bear no colour for the thing he is,
Fashion it thus; that what he is, augmented,
Would run to these and these extremities:
And therefore think him as a serpent’s egg
Which, hatch’d, would, as his kind, grow mischievous,
And kill him in the shell.

Brutus, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Act II, Scene I

Warning: This post contains nudity (nicely censored though 😛 )

Relying on exposure is a cheap attention grabbing device… Most of the background art features city landscape and not very impressive. Character design is nice. The momentum was kept throughout the episode with a chase sequence, and we got a basic set up, but I suspect that most of the things will remain unclear till the last couple of episodes. The choice of character design and the sources the anime was based on suggest a sad end…

Oh, just in case you are wondering, the US police is not that stupid! 😛

The protagonist referred to this scene from Taxi Driver featuring Robert De Niro:

Blame Kanzeon for leaking that secret footage 😛

  1. Thanks very much for the passage from Julius Caesar. I was wondering where that quote came from — and what it will mean in the context of the show. Thanks also for the Taxi Driver clip, and the chance to see that bit of H&C again.

  2. well, i’ll keep brutus and de niro in mind when i watch this. come to think of it, de niro would make a fine brutus..hhmmmm.

    1. Yes, it is a nice place to live 🙂 Washington DC actually looks like a real city compared to most other US cities. However, the thing I like the most about it are the museums. It was an amazing experience to visit most of them 🙂 I would recommend anyone who gets a chance to visit Washington DC to check them out 🙂

  3. What luck…i’m actually in D.C right now on vacation. This show is so ridiculous that i just might follow it. Do they have a terrorist nudist colony or something?

  4. i detect an anti-american bias (people not that nice, cities not real cities). what’s up, kitsune? 🙂

    1. Well, I just find it unlikely that a someone who looks like a businessman in the middle of Washington DC would give their pants to a stranger. People in the US are relatively nice compared to some other countries, but I doubt the behavior would differ in other capitals.

Cities in the US are not very good. I find that they are quite different from cities in Europe and Asia. Many cities in the US are just places to work that consist of a few tall buildings that turn into a ghost town in the evening because most people live in suburbs. There are some exceptions though.

My opinion is definitely biased, but it is hardly anti-American 😉

    1. It is not my censorship though – that was the original footage 😛 I can see how much money they will make on selling uncensored DVDs 😛
