“I believe that making animation with pencils is the only way for us to survive.”
– Hayao Miyazaki

Was making 70 staff to draw 170 000 pictures by hand over one and a half years worth the effort? You’ll have to decide for yourself, but I enjoyed the film. While far from the best Miyazaki’s work, Ponyo is a nice slice-of-life movie that a family can watch together. I especially enjoyed the backgrounds and the water fish car case sequence 🙂

  1. I just caught this film recently during my long holiday. I love most of Miyazaki’s work and Ponyo, though not his best work, is still good to watch. The animation style is cute. The story is cute and simple and suitable for kids. Love the underwater street scenes. Hand drawn technique in animation is a dying art but Miyazaki always seem to make it good. I though they are well drawn. 🙂

    1. Yes, it is good to watch, and I enjoyed it 🙂

There were plenty of cute moments in this film 🙂

Indeed, completely hand drawn animation is rare these days. It is good that some people retain the tradition and produce such nice works 🙂
